The Mental Health Specialist is responsible for assisting with positive support plan development, development of the mental health training for staff at the homes with the mental health certification and being a resource for staff working in the mental health homes served by Opal Services, Inc. Some of the job responsibilities include: developing mental health summaries for individual service recipients, providing training to staff on how to effectively work with the service recipients, and being available for urgent and non-urgent consultations. Our Corporate office is in Eagan and the group homes the service recipients reside in are in Dakota County. 

Requirements include the ability to use both creative and analytical thinking skills; use good judgment and make sound decisions; speak fluent English and follow written and verbal instructions; read, comprehend, and implement programs; document, chart, and log information; must be capable of competently managing multiple responsibilities; and must be a licensed driver. Applicants must have knowledge of mental illness, and relevant experience.

Education/Experience Preference:

~ The completion of at least 30 semester hours or 45 quarter hours in behavioral sciences or related fields and has a least 2,000 hours of supervised experience in the delivery of services to adults with mental illness, substance use disorder, emotional disturbance, traumatic brain injury or developmental disabilities and completes training on mental illness, recovery from mental illness, mental health de-escalation techniques, co-occurring mental illness and substance abuse, and psychotropic medications and side effects. OR

~ The completion of a practicum or internship that requires direct interaction with adults serviced and is focused on behavioral sciences or related fields and has a least 4,000 hours of supervised experience in the delivery of services to adults with mental illness, substance use disorder, emotional disturbance, traumatic brain injury or developmental disabilities and completes training on mental illness, recovery from mental illness, mental health de-escalation techniques, co-occurring mental illness and substance abuse, and psychotropic medications and side effects. OR

~ Holds a bachelor’s degree in behavioral sciences or related fields and completes a practicum or internship that requires direct interaction with adults serviced and is focused on behavioral sciences or related fields. OR

~ Obtained a master’s degree in one of the behavioral sciences or related fields from an accredited college or university, with at least 4,000 hours of post-master’s supervised experience in the delivery of clinical services in the treatment of mental illness.
